JOANN Stores closing: we're here for you

Welcome to the 34th edition of the Sewfinity newsletter, written by me, Angela Bowman.

Hi from Angela

Meridian Idaho, Sunday March 16, 2025

Good morning!

I'm sure you've heard the news: JOANN is closing. It's unbelievable really - a craft store that's been around for over 80 years with more than 800 stores will be gone soon.

I certainly remember going to our local JOANN store, it was the only place nearby to buy fabric. I loved wandering through the fabric aisles, checking out the sewing books, and perching at the pattern table, flipping through the Simplicity, Vogue, and McCall's catalogs. I'd chat with the other ladies at the table, jot down a few pattern numbers, help myself to the pattern drawers, and go pick out fabric and interfacing. I'd take a number at the cutting table, and while waiting for my turn I'd browse the remnant bins and the notions aisle. After getting my fabric cut I'd head to the checkout, taking my time, walking down a couple of the seasonal aisles to see if there's any decor that I "needed". After checkout, I'd drive home and spread all my loot across the dining table, read through the pattern, and start cutting and sewing. It was such an indulgent way to spend a few hours on a Saturday. I loved every second.

That JOANN experience has changed over years, though, and not for the better. Long wait times, low product quality, coupon and discount hoops to jump through, and a general grumpy vibe. I stopped going to JOANN long before Sewfinity was born. It just wasn't pleasant anymore.

It's sad though, to see JOANN go. It seems like a dark cloud for sewists and it feels like a loss to the sewing community. So what's the silver lining? There are many other sewing shops available to you! Many of them are your local brick & mortar shops run by your neighbors. And many more are online shops run by small business owners - that's me!

We at Sewfinity are here for you:

Perch at our online pattern table and see which projects float your boat. I've hand-picked each pattern because they are easy to follow, have an awesome design, and the pattern designer is superb.

Walk down our digital fabric aisle and peruse by fabric type: cotton, linen, flannel, canvas, and evenweave. In the quilting cotton sections you'll see that we have every single color of entire collections. And for every fabric, you can choose to add yardage or fat quarters to your cart.

"But I like to be able to see and feel fabric in-person before I buy it!" you say? A great option is to invest in a color card - it makes choosing colors easy when buying online. And consider buying fat quarters before going all-in: they're a great way to get a swatch - a usable swatch!

Now wander through our notions aisle, where you'll find high-quality supplies. Choose to browse by Supply Type or Supply Technique, and you'll find cutting tools, elastic, bag hardware, marking tools, needles, thread, pins, rulers, interfacing, trims, webbing, zippers, and more. We even have a cross-stitch section!

Then at checkout, no huge waiting line for you! You get to buy hassle-free and have your order fulfilled super-fast. That's how we roll.

Odds are, you already know all of this since you've likely shopped at Sewfinity before. So I am asking you:

Would you share Sewfinity.com with your sewing people? I'd love it.

SALE: 75% off Moda Ombre

In my last letter I told you that this discontinued line was half-off. Well I just upped it to 75% off. And this is all we have left. Still some good colors in there!

Use code OMBRE-BYE-BYE at checkout.

While supplies last

To thank you for being a subscriber, you get to shop this sale earlier than everyone else.

Every month (or so) Angela writes a letter about her thoughts, behind-the-scenes stuff at Sewfinity, and things worth knowing in the world of sewing. It's like getting a nice letter in the mail. Not too spammy. And not too often.

I'm sitting on my back patio as I write this, enjoying the sights and sounds of autumn in Idaho: bright blue sky, golden sunshine, puffy white clouds, orange and red and yellow and green leaves everywhere.
