Big Sur Canvas discontinued + SewPINK + FPP toolkit

Welcome to the 38th edition of the Sewfinity newsletter, written by me, Angela Bowman.

Hi from Angela

Meridian Idaho, Sunday October 12, 2025

Good morning!

Well dangit, Robert Kaufman is discontinuing Big Sur Canvas. I'm sad to pass on this news since we have quite a few canvas customers, mostly handmade sellers. They use canvas to make pillow covers, bespoke bags, and yes, stretch on a frame for fine art painting. One local guy uses it to make cornhole bags, choosing from our entire collection of 50 colors to match to various sports teams colors. He's teaching himself to sew late in life and he is absolutely fearless - I love that.

So, will RK have canvas available again the future? They said maybe, they're looking into it. They're guessing they'll wind up with a similar product, but not branded the same. It's all speculation right now, though.

That means what's left of canvas at Sewfinity is all there will be, and I'm not sure, but I might be one of the rare shops that has the entire Big Sur collection right now. Actually, the only color I'm out of is White.

So have at it folks, go get some canvas while it's here. This is the good heavy 100% cotton canvas (9.6 oz) that's made in Japan.

In other sewing news, I made some bins for SewPINK, put together a gradient fabric bundle, and curated a toolkit for my beloved technique, FPP. Oh and there's some new gorgeous quilt kits you need to see!

Enjoy your October!

SewPINK: Contain Yourself

October is breast cancer awareness month, and every year I participate in SewPINK, the annual event by the team at ByAnnie to encourage people to get their screenings.

This year I made a trio of bins with ByAnnie's Contain Yourself sewing pattern, which is super simple and fun to make.

I took a floral print from my stash and coordinated solid pinks with it. Adding solids to a stash print makes it come together so well, plus it's so rewarding to use what you have.

I made a couple of mods to the pattern - go read the post for the details.

SewPINK 2025 Fabric Bundle

Here's the bundle I curated for this year's SewPINK.

These fabrics are all Confetti Cotton Solids quilting cotton by Riley Blake Designs.

I chose 12 colors that form a gradient of pinks and peachy-pinks plus a couple of neutrals.

FPP Toolkit

Many of you know that I am obsessed with foundation paper piecing. And so of course I had to put together an FPP toolkit.

These are the supplies I personally use, each item serving a very particular purpose:

The 60wt poly thread is strong enough to withstand the FPP process yet thin enough to minimize seam bulk.

The size 10 needles are perfectly sized to the thread.

The specialty rulers are no-brainer must-haves for trimming.

The stainless steel tweezers with a super-thin curved tip allow easy access to tight spaces when removing tiny bits of paper.

Ginger Applique Scissors

Not included in the FPP toolkit, but a very helpful optional tool: Gingher Applique Scissors. They're fantastic for grading seams, which I frequently do during FPP when dark fabrics overlap light fabrics in the seam allowance, making shadows on the front of the quilt.

The duckbill blade and offset handle safely lifts fabric layers to be trimmed away for flawless, controlled cuts. Which is super important because there is no way I'm going to risk cutting my FPP patchwork after the time I've spent on it :)

Hand + Soul Quilt Kits

There are 4 new quilt kits you need to see, all featuring silky Pure Solids quilting cotton by Art Gallery Fabrics.

The pattern is available as a Block of the Month by Eudaimonia Studios, named Hand + Soul.

This kit with a deep moody foresty background is the Autumn Canyon colorway, a Sewfinity exclusive.

Every month (or so) Angela writes a letter about her thoughts, behind-the-scenes stuff at Sewfinity, and things worth knowing in the world of sewing. It's like getting a nice letter in the mail. Not too spammy. And not too often.

Welcome to the 36th edition of the Sewfinity newsletter, written by me, Angela Bowman. Hi from Angela Meridian Idaho, Sunday July 6, 2025 Good afternoon! Do you know how to hand quilt? I've been wanting to learn for quite some time - I just love the idea of a completely bespoke quilt made by hand. I'm learning with big stitch hand quilting - nice and easy big stitches with chunky thread. I'm starting with simple straight lines, and yeesh, that first line was really rough. Lots of uneven...

Welcome to the 35th edition of the Sewfinity newsletter, written by me, Angela Bowman. Hi from Angela Meridian Idaho, Sunday June 1, 2025 Good afternoon! It's the first day of June, what a lovely day. It's 74 degrees with a slight breeze. Perfect. The bees are buzzing on my lavender plants, the birds are singing, and I'm enjoying the fleeting perfect couple weeks' worth of weather here in southern Idaho before it gets hot. My husband jokes that I'm a weather Goldilocks, and that right now...
